NEW DELHI: India has a deadline for the nuclear deal -- the US plans to formally present the India-US nuclear deal for an exemption at the NSG meeting in South Africa on November 11.

Since this can be possible only if India manages to sew up the details of its safeguards agreement with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) before then, UPA government will soon be required to take a call on getting past the Left-dictated pause on negotiations with the IAEA.

To that extent, the US timetable may have the effect of precipitating the political confrontation which has looked certain but which the two sides have so far managed to avert.

India doesn't have to sign the safeguards agreement just yet, it will only be signed after the NSG and US Congress clears the deal. But the details of the agreement will need to be worked out.

The expectation is this -- the 45 member countries will certainly ask for over a month to make up their minds, work out the political calculations etc. Which means the US may call in an extraordinary meeting of the group in January to formally decide on the exemption.

Following this, the US wants to give the deal to the Congress for its mandatory up-down vote. Ideally, US has informed India, it would like to present it to Congress soon after the winter break.

The Congress itself has 90 days before voting on it, a very complicated process, involving restrictions on recess for more than three days etc.

Senior US official and chief technical negotiator of the 123 Agreement, Richard Stratford, said in Vienna on Thursday, "The US wants to meet the entire pre-requisites of the operationalisation of the deal by the end of this year."

He said the US will try to impress upon the NSG member nations the need for clean and unconditional exemption sought by India for nuclear trade under the Indo-US civil nuclear deal. It will be his job to convince the NSG of the viability and importance of the Indian nuclear deal.

"I will explain to the members how both India and the US arrived at the agreement and also put forth the conditions asked by India for a clean, unconditional exemption (from NSG rules to enable nuclear commerce)," Stratford was quoted as saying.

Meanwhile, in Ankara, US undersecretary Nicholas Burns said, "I think the US and India nuclear deal is... going to be successful, we are going to move forward on it, and you'll see that happen in the next few months." Everybody expects the NSG to be a difficult sell. Both US and India are separately preparing to hardsell the deal to the rest of the world.

While Americans are more conversant with the nitty-gritty of selling a deal, for Indian diplomacy, it's a novel exercise. It means the otherwise brahmanical minded foreign service will have to turn corporate lobbyists which is itself a difficult exercise.

In order to be successfull in affilate marketing choosing the right merchants to promote is very important. You can do everything else right from creating effective ads and advertising in the right places and still not make money if you don't promote the right merchant. The first thing I recommend looking at is the amount of commission that is offered.

This isn't the only thing you should consider but to make money the commission should be generous. I would say in most cases a good program will payout at least 50 percent commission. Commissions earned for each sale in most cases should be around 25 or 30 dollars. This can change due to other considerations such as conversion rates and popularity of the product or service.

If what you are promoting is a hot popular item you can expect the conversion rates to be higher and an easier sale which might justify promoting a merchant with lower commissions per sale. I also look at how many others are promoting a merchant. If there is a large number of affiliates that means you will have a lot of competition promoting that merchants product.

If there are few affiliates promoting a merchant that tells me that maybe the merchants site isn't converting sales or some other reason affiliates haven't been happy with that merchant. Shipping cos want ports to bear dredging costs

Mumbai: Shipping lines calling at Indian ports to load and unload cargo want the government to bear the cost of dredging the port’s channel and berth to lower the charges that they pay to dock at these ports. Port calling costs constitute a major expense for shipping lines entering an Indian port to carry cargo.
Compared with international ports, these charges (called vessel related charges) are high in Indian ports, says S.S. Rangnekar, former director of liner and passenger services at state-run Shipping Corp. of India.
“It is 50% more expensive to bring a vessel to Indian ports compared with Jebel Ali in Dubai, Singapore and Colombo,” says Ganesh Raj, senior vice-president and managing director, sub-continent, at Dubai government-owned world’s third biggest container terminal operator, DP World.
Rajiv Kumar Tetarbe, general manager, commercial, at Hong Kong-based dry bulk ship owner Chellaram Shipping Co. Pvt. Ltd, claims that Indian ports “are fleecing ship owners”.
According to Tetarbe, a Panamax carrier pays about $30,000 (Rs12.3 lakh) for calling at any of the ports in Australia for loading iron ore and coal. For unloading the same cargo at an Indian port, the ship owner has to pay about $80,000—more than two and a half times the cost levied at Australian ports.
Panamax carriers are ships that can sail through the Panama Canal carrying dry bulk commodities such as iron ore, coal and steel.
Port calling costs in India are high because the 12 Central government-run major ports that account for about 76% of the total cargo handled at all the Indian ports, pass on the cost of dredging the ports’ channel and berth to the ships calling at these ports.
This activity, known as capital dredging, is required to make the channel deep enough to accomodate ships. Since Indian ports accumulate silt quickly, they also resort to maintenance dredging throughout the year to maintain the depth in the channel and at the cargo handling berths at a certain level.
Rangnekar says that the capital dredging costs, in developed countries, are borne by the government. “There is an urgent need to benchmark the vessel-related charges at Indian ports with those prevailing in neighbouring ports to bring them on a par,” he said. To achieve this, the government will have to bear the cost of capital dredging rather than recover this cost from the shipping lines, he adds.
Mumbai Port chairperson Rani Jadhav says that Indian ports should strive for deep-draft berths that can accomodate bigger ships. At the same time, charging competitive rates can attract ships andcargo.
An inter-ministerial group, headed by shipping secretary A.K. Mohapatra, in a recent report has recommended that the government bear the cost of dredging the channel and cargo handling berths at major ports.
The group was set up by the prime minister’s committee on infrastructure to suggest ways to reduce the waiting time for cargo at Indian ports.

No doubt there are some who will label James J. White's imminent return as head of the Maryland Port Administration as typical partisan politics. After all, he was pushed out by Gov. Robert L. Ehrlich Jr., a Republican, two years ago. Now the man who was first appointed to the post by Democratic Gov. Parris N. Glendening is headed back thanks to another Democrat, Gov. Martin O'Malley.
But that would misrepresent what has happened. If anything, Mr. White's hiring is a rejection of politics (and, to some degree, pride) over performance.

Mr. White, who was first appointed port director in 1999, is the best the MPA has ever had. No less an authority than Helen Delich Bentley, the former Republican congresswoman and stalwart supporter of the port that bears her name, pointed this out at the time of his ouster. His reputation in the rather insular world of port operations is golden, and his restoration merely closes what had been an unfortunate chapter in the MPA's recent history.

After all, it was interference in port operations by then-Maryland Transportation Secretary Robert L. Flanagan that caused Mr. White to resign - and created an uproar within the port community. His return rights that wrong. (The wrongness of it was made clear by a consultant's report that came out a few months later recommending the port have greater autonomy and less meddling from transportation secretaries.)

F. Brooks Royster III, an experienced executive at Gulf Coast ports, was a well-qualified choice as Mr. White's successor. The chief criticism of his two-year tenure is that while the port has gotten busier, its growth has been fueled chiefly by existing contracts. Baltimore needs to find new business opportunities; Mr. White has proved that he can close such deals. Unfortunately, it will also mean compensating Mr. Royster for the final three years of his five-year contract (an amount likely to be less than the $675,000 that's been widely reported). Mr. Royster was the first port leader to be given an employment contract; the uproar of two years ago likely required it. Mr. White will not be given such a guarantee, and that's as it should be.

Still, the money will be well spent if Mr. White produces as many believe he will. The port provides thousands of well-paying blue-collar jobs for the Baltimore area at a time when such employment opportunities are few and far between. The new director must now be given the free hand he should have had years ago to get that economic engine running at full throttle.

US 'no' to duty-free import of Indian jewellery

Days after the collapse of G4 talks on the WTO, the US has withdrawn concessions given to imports on gold jewellery and brass lamps from India as well as auto parts from Brazil as part of a revision of trade sops given to developing countries.

The duty-free access was withdrawn under its annual review of generalised system of preferences (GSP) through a proclamation signed by US President George Bush yesterday.

The changes mean exporters of gold jewellery from India, the world’s largest producer, would now have to pay an import duty of 4 per cent. The move will impact close to $1.8 billion of jewellery exports to the US, which accounts for one-third of the total shipment of $5.21 billion.

The decision would also affect exports of brass lamps, hitting the handicraft sector struggling under the impact of a hike in the rupee value. The concessions were removed on imports that exceeded the new statutory threshold established by US Congress, US Trade Representative Susan Schwab said.

Plea to implement export package

CHENNAI: The Federation of Indian Export Organisations (FIEO) on Saturday urged Union Finance Minister P Chidambaram to immediately implement the export package Union Commerce and Industry Minister Kamal Nath unveiled on June 13.

Addressing reporters after the Management Committee Meeting, FIEO president Ganesh Kumar Gupta said: “We expect the Finance Minister to announce the package within the next fortnight. If immediate steps are not taken to offset the erosion of competitiveness of our exports, India will lose $12.5 billion of exports in the current fiscal. Besides, it will lead to a slowdown of exports, closure of units and loss of 8 million jobs across the country in various sectors.”

Citing a survey conducted by the FIEO, he said 15 per cent of the units would retrench 50 per cent of their workforce, 21 per cent of the units would lay off 30-50 per cent of their strength and 18 per cent would cut the strength by 10-30 per cent. Around 46 per cent of the respondents, he said, were restructuring and reducing manpower in line with their order requirements.

Pakistan imported 4.8mn bales to meet textile demand

KARACHI: The millers, spinning and private sector commercial companies imported around 4.8 million cotton bales from USA, India, Brazil and central Asian countries during the last fiscal July-June 2007, the traders and importers said on Saturday.

The country produced around 12.5 million cotton bales during July-June 2007 while the demand by textile sector stood around 15.5 million bales. The shortfall was met by the imports.

Keeping the past experience, the economic managers of the country on repeated calls by the Ministry of Textile Industry (MINTEX) and local textile industry allowed import of cotton through land route from neighbouring countries including India to reduce the cost of production and cost of import. With the issuance of notification the actual imports would take place and much cheaper cotton would be available to the industry for its consumption.

Ministry of Commerce (MoC) in May 2007 allows import of long staple cotton through land route from India and Uzbekistan. The import of long staple cotton through land route from India would reduce the cost of import and would help local textile industry to enhance its production and its value addition for increase in textile exports

Export NZ welcomes trade security agreement

Export New Zealand welcomes the international move forward in security as New Zealand and the United States signed an international agreement to recognise each country’s supply chain security schemes over the weekend in Belgium.

The Mutual Recognition Arrangement is part of the World Customs Organisation's global trade security initiative, designed to improve supply chain security compliance. In return, exporters should see fewer delays at international borders. New Zealand and the United States are the first countries to sign.

“This world-first will mean a more secure supply chain for exporters, translating into reduced inspections and speedier delivery of goods,” said Bob Walters, CEO of Export New Zealand.

This move demonstrates support and co-operation between the US’s Partnership Against Terrorism Program and NZ Customs' Secure Exports Scheme. Benefits could include fewer delays at borders as fewer inspections may be needed. If goods can move more quickly through customs, it will mean better transit times for New Zealand products.

The violent takeover by Hamas is not just a death knell for Israeli-Palestinian peace, it is also a growing radical threat to America's hopes for the Mideast. By Michael Hirsh.
The Israelis didn't want Palestinian elections back in January 2006. Even Mahmoud Abbas, the Palestinian president, had been worried about them and kept asking for delays. As early as the spring of 2005, Abbas had warned American officials that he did not have the popular support to disarm Hamas, the Islamist party that turned suicide terror bombings into a standard tactic in Israel and which both Abbas and the Israelis saw was growing in power. But Bush administration officials insisted, confident of the curative powers of democracy. Later, after Hamas stunned the world by winning control of the Palestinian Parliament, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice claimed: "Nobody saw it coming."

The line could describe much of what has resulted from George W. Bush's efforts to transform the world - or at least one part of it, the Middle East. As long as the Islamists of Hamas refused to recognize Israel, the United States refused to deal with the Hamas-dominated Palestinian government. The hope was not that ordinary Palestinians would suffer, but that they would realize such a government was not in their best interests. At the same time Washington tried to bolster Abbas and his Fatah movement - the secular Palestinian party founded by Yasir Arafat. The strategy backfired. America was seen to be taking sides. Hamas, under pressure, built up its own paramilitary forces to counter those controlled by Abbas (and trained by the United States). Then, last week, as tit-for-tat killings in Gaza spiraled out of control, those Hamas fighters in Gaza turned out to be far more fierce than their better-funded opponents. The result: the radicals are now in charge of Gaza, a 140-square-mile strip of land on the Mediterranean Sea along Israel's western border that is packed with 1.4 million Palestinians, most of them desperately poor. Until late 2005 Gaza was occupied by Israeli troops, and until last week Bush still saw it as part of the new Palestinian state he wanted to create along with the larger West Bank. Now Gaza may become Hamas's private enclave and perhaps even an ungovernable font of terror.

It is also, along with the quagmire in Iraq, a historic rebuff. In his second Inaugural Address, the president embraced the promotion of democracy as his top priority, declaring: "The survival of liberty in our land increasingly depends on the success of liberty in other lands." But in Iraq and the Palestinian territories, as in Russia, Pakistan and other places, liberty is retreating. And the fact remains that those places where Washington has most actively and directly pushed for elections - Iraq, Lebanon, the West Bank and Gaza - are today the most factionalized, chaotic and violent in the region.
Why does the disaster in Gaza matter? In part because the defeat of the secular - and more moderate - Fatah forces could, along with the insurgents' success in Iraq, inspire Islamist radicals in the region and around the world. Hamas is not the Taliban, and it knows that an uptick in rocket attacks against Israel will be met with a harsh response. But, as Bush said in his second Inaugural, the whole point of promoting freedom is to blunt the hopelessness and anger that breed radicalism. Gaza faces 50 percent unemployment in the best of times. Qaeda-like splinter groups that have carried out kidnappings of foreigners have already begun to appear. Further isolating the territory is not likely to fill its residents with faith in the future
Citizens of countries where Washington has called for greater democracy - Iran, say, or Syria - now have three less-than-inspiring examples close to home. In Lebanon, Iranian-backed Hizbullah reigns as a power unto itself. In Iraq, the sect-based parties that came to power in the 2005 elections have created a bloody nightmare, and stymied any attempts to forge a truly national consensus. And in the Palestinian territories, Washington simply rejected the election results.
Optimists in Israel and America argue that Abbas, having dismissed the Hamas-led Palestinian government, is now free to receive millions in aid money and customs revenues that had been held back. The idea seems to be to bolster the wealthier, less radicalized West Bank and starve Gaza (of attention and respectability, if not food). But simply walling off Gaza, and more than a million Palestinians, will bring the region no closer to peace. In a recent interview with NEWSWEEK, Rice said that establishing the idea of a "two-state solution" was one of her proudest achievements. "You now have a broad international consensus," she said. "That's a conceptual breakthrough." What she's left with now, at best, is a one-and-a-half-state solution.
Gaza also poses a lesson in the limits of imperial power in the 21st century. Let's face it: Americans have always made crummy imperialists. A century ago Teddy Roosevelt complained that "America lacked the stomach for empire." A senior White House official echoed that lament early in the Iraq occupation, noting that America has the power of a true empire, like Rome or like Britain in the 19th century, but not the taste for acting like one. "Look at us in Iraq - how much difficulty we have in saying we will anoint people to run the country. Does anyone think the Romans or the Brits would have been deterred?" he grumbled.
Nor did many hard-liners in Washington ever fully understand that using raw power to "impose" democracy on peoples who were not ready to seize it for themselves was a chimera. By insisting on cure-all elections in countries and territories that had no institutions of justice and security, or a politically aware economic middle class, to sustain democracy, the Bush team clearly seems to have overreached.
The next American president will have to grapple with a Middle East that is messier and quite possibly angrier than before 9/11. But also, in a larger sense, he or she will have to confront anew a harsh lesson in the limits of power. America can only be, at best, a guiding hand behind an international system that is disposed to democracy and open markets. Bush is himself coming to acknowledge this, especially by maintaining a multilateral front with the Europeans to deal with the nuclear threat from Iran. Arrest warrant issued against Dera chief

BATHINDA, JUNE 20: A local court today issued a conditional arrest warrant against Dera Sacha Sauda Chief Baba Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, accused of hurting Sikh religious sentiments.

Duty magistrate A L Khitchi issued the order today but directed the police to seek the Punjab government’s permission before arresting the Sirsa-based Dera head.
In their application, the police had claimed they had “sufficient evidence” against him. Sikh organisations have been mounting pressure on the Punjab government to arrest the Dera chief for “hurting” the religious sentiments of the community after an advertisement showed him in a attire similar to Guru Gobind Singh.
Meanwhile, trying to end the stand-off with Sikhs, the Dera chief has issued a fresh letter of apology for his alleged blasphemous act.
The letter, the second in a month, has reached the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee.
DSGMC president Paramjit Singh Sarna told reporters that in the “unsigned letter, the Baba had again apologised to Guru Gobind Singh and the community. The letter was being forwarded to the Akal Takht, the highest temporal seat of the Sikhs, Sarna said, adding that the DSGMC had also asked sect authorities to “re-send a signed letter”. Akal Takht Jathedar Joginder Singh Vedanti is currently abroad.
Sikh bodies plan march on June 24
MOGA: In a bid to mount pressure on the state Government to arrest the Dera Sacha Sauda head, various Sikh organisations have decided to undertake a protest march from Gurdwara Zafarnama in this district to Damdama Sahib, Talwandi Sabo, in Bathinda on June 24. The protesters will also include DSGMC president Paramjit Singh as well as leaders of the SAD(A) and Sant Samaj.

Kalam ignites Presidential contest

NEW DELHI: President APJ Abdul Kalam on Wednesday ignited the Presidential race by indicating his keenness to run for a second term, but with a caveat that “there should be some certainty” over the outcome. Implied in this assertion was a suggestion that a bigger voting bloc should underwrite his candidature. This changed the complexion of the game and pushed Mr Shekhawat out of the race. The BJP, which read the writing on the wall correctly, said it welcomed the initiative taken by the United National Progressive Alliance. A meeting of the NDA is convened here on Friday to take stock of the changed situation. A rattled Congress leadership has summoned senior party leaders for a stock taking session late this evening. The party has also asked PCC leaders to reach Delhi on Thursday for consultations on the election. In a day of fast-paced developments, the United National Progressive Alliance, which accounts for just 10% of the electoral college, acquired the airs of the king maker. The UNPA leaders, who were expecting a plain “no” from Rashtrapati Bhavan till the President met them, notched a major victory when Mr Kalam himself modified his stand on contesting the polls only if there was a consensus on his name. At the meeting with the Front’s leaders, he talked about the certainty of the outcome but not on the consensus. The Congress has reasons to be worried as Mr Kalam’s entry into the race could change the dynamics of the election. The President, who enjoys the goodwill of large sections, can upset its calculations if the supporters of the Congress do not share the ruling party’s leadership’s anxiety to put Ms Pratibha Patil in the top post. The DMK could be the worst-affected as its rival in the state politics, particularly the AIADMK are certain to use Mr Kalam’s candidacy to score a point with the “Tamil” constituency. Till this evening, Mr Karunanidhi had the luxury of dismissing it as a joke as President Kalam had not indicated his willingness to contest. In the event of Mr Kalam entering the fray, Karunanidhi’s backing for Pratibha Patil could invite the charge of the DMK going against the interests of a Tamil candidate. It is this window of opportunity that the UNPA leaders are trying to explore by opening channels of communication with UPA allies. The UNPA leaders also know that Kalam’s victory can inflict grievous damage on the UPA as it will be the biggest setback for Ms Sonia Gandhi and the government.

People's Prez open to second term

New Delhi: President APJ Abdul Kalam has finally bowed in the face of overwhelming public love and support for him and agreed to take up the post of President for another term. The President has a condition though, that there has to be certainty before he says yes to join the race.
"As there is overwhelming love from people from across the country, I am willing to go for a second term if there is certainity. However, I am willing to wait for a few days," President Kalam told a delegation of Third Front leaders on Wednesday when they called on him to persuade the former nuclear scientist to join the race.
After days of media speculation about Kalam's reluctance to take up the post for a second term, the President finally made his stand clear when leaders of the Third Front called on him to persuade him to seek a second term in the top post.
Kalam is ready for a second term "if there is certainty," Telugu Desam Party (TDP) chief Chandrababu Naidu was quoted by PTI as saying after the meeting.
Asked to elaborate what he meant by certainty, Naidu said: "Your draw your own conclusions. It includes everything."
While political pundits were still trying to read between the lines to draw inference from these words, some tried to interpret the words and say that Kalam is indeed willing to continue if there is political consensus around his name.
This, however, looks a distant possibility now considering the fact that the UPA-Left combine has already started the process of fielding Pratibha Patil for the election.
Buoyed by Kalam's positive response, the UNPA immediately launched a campaign, reaching out to both the NDA and UPA camps in an effort to build consensus in support of Kalam.
Top UNPA leader and TDP chief Chandrababu Naidu even approached Sonia Gandhi asking support for Kalam. The UPA chairman, however, is believed to have declined the appeal. Naidu, however, is likely to hold a second round of meeting with Sonia Gandhi sometime soon.
The UNPA leaders also called on former prime minister and senior BJP leader Atal Behari Vajpayee, asking his for support on Kalam. Vajpayee is believed to have told the Third Front leaders that he wants all attempts to be made in favour of Kalam's nomination.

India, Pak, Iran to hold pipeline talks June-end

NOIDA, India (Reuters) - India, Pakistan and Iran will hold their next round of talks on a proposed $7 billion gas pipeline at the end of the month, and aim to sign a final deal a month later, an Indian oil ministry official said on Wednesday.
Indian officials and their Pakistani counterparts will meet in New Delhi on June 27, and all three parties will then hold two days of talks on June 28-29, Petroleum Secretary M.S. Srinivasan told reporters.
"This will pave the way for a ministerial level meeting in the second half of July ... We hope to sign a final deal by July-end," he said.
Iran has the world's second-largest gas reserves after Russia. However, sanctions, politics and construction delays have slowed its gas development and analysts say Tehran is unlikely to become a major exporter for a decade.
India and Pakistan need to tie up fuel supplies for their energy-hungry economies.
Last week, Iran had said it expected a deal on the pipeline by the end of June.
The proposed pipeline will initially carry 60 million cubic metres of gas to be exported daily to Pakistan and India, half for each country.
The delivery point would be at the Iran-Pakistan border and India is yet to finalise the contract for the transportation costs and the transit fee with Pakistan.
Under the plan, the pipeline's capacity would be increased to 150 million cubic metres at a later date.

India-Singapore CEOs’ forum to boost business ties

NEW DELHI, JUN 20: India and Singapore have launched a CEOs forum, comprising top industry honchos, in an effort to provide further push to business ties that have been growing following a comprehensive economic cooperation agreement (CECA)between the two countries that was signed nearly two years ago.
‘‘The forum will examine developments in India-Singapore relations consequent to the conclusion of the CECA," said Pranab Mukherjee, external affairs minister, who is currently on a three-day visit to Singapore.

At the launch, the minister said, "It could also suggest specific sectors as focus areas for the near term while making recommendations aimed at enhancing long-term complementarities between India and Singapore."
The forum will be co-chaired by steel magnate Ratan Tata, chairman of the Tata Group, from the Indian side and Koh Boon Hwee, chairman of DBS Group Holdings Ltd and DBS Bank Ltd, representing the Singaporean side.
Briefing the mediapersons here, official spokesman in the ministry of external affairs Navtej Sarna said, "A day after India and Singapore announced the establishment of strategic dialogue, Mukherjee and Minister of Trade and Industry of Singapore Lim Hng Kiang also launched the India Business Forum (IBF) in Singapore."

Kalam for Round 2 if there's certainty: Naidu

NEW DELHI: The Third Front on Wednesday claimed that President A P J Abdul Kalam was ready to contest the Presidential election for a second term provided there was "certainty" but it did not elaborate on what it meant. "He is willing to consider contesting for a second term provided there is certainty among political parties," TDP chief Chandrababu Naidu, said, here, after a meeting with Kalam in the company of the newly-formed United National Progressive Alliance (UNPA) leaders. Asked repeatedly as to what he meant by certainty, Naidu said, "that implies everything. You draw your own inference." Earlier, Kalam had made it clear that he would consider throwing his hat in the ring only if there was consensus in his favour. Naidu was accompanied by SP leaders Mulayam Singh and Amar Singh, INLD chief Om Prakash Chautala, MDMK leader Vaiko, AIADMK representatives Malaichamy, Thambidurai, Maitreyan and AGP chief Brindaban Goswami. On Monday, the alliance leaders had met in Chennai and decided to back Kalam for a second term, giving a new twist to the Presidential race. Straight from the Rashtrapati Bhavan the leaders drove to Amar Singh's residence for a meeting to chalk out their next strategy. AIADMK chief J Jayalalithaa cancelled her visit to Delhi at the last minute on health grounds. Asked about her absence, Naidu said the party was being represented by three of its senior leaders and she had also telephoned him in the morning expressing her inability to attend the meeting. Observing that several surveys had indicated that more than 90 per cent of the people were in favour of Kalam, Naidu said their was total unanimity in the country for his nomination as President. "All sections of the society, farmers, students, businessmen, the total country is accepting Kalam's name," he said. "With that mission, we requested Kalam that he should contest for the second term in the interest of the nation and not for any individual," Naidu told reporters after the 45-minute meeting with Kalam. He said Kalam was deeply involved in igniting the minds of the young people and promoting the country and he has done extremely good work which nobody has done in the past. "Now it is the responsibility of the political parties to support his candidature. We appeal to all the political parties to support Kalam as it is the mandate of the people," he said. Asked what would be the UNPA's future plans if Kalam refused to contest, Chautala said "how can you say that. Wait till the 30th." June 30 is the last day for filing nominations.
